సాధారణంగా ప్రతినెల కృష్ణచతుర్దశి రోజున "శివరాత్రి" వస్తూనే ఉంటుంది. దీనిని "మాసశివరాత్రి" అంటారు. ఆ రోజున ఈశ్వరుని ఆలయాల్లో విశేష పూజలు చేయిస్తూ ఉంటారు. అందులో మాఘ బహుళ చతుర్దశి నాడు వచ్చే "మహాశివరాత్రి" పర్వదినం చాలా విశిష్టమైనదని పండితులు అంటున్నారు. ఒకసారి పార్వతీదేవి పరమశివుడిని శివరాత్రి గురించి ఆడుగుతుంది.
