Colombo: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Sri Lanka next month, the first bilateral visit to the country by an Indian premier in over 25 years, and is likely to go to Tamil-dominated Jaffna amid signs of growing amity between the two neighbours.
"Prime Minister Modi will arrive on March 13 on a 3-day visit," Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Rajitha Senaratne said. During his Lanka visit, Modi is likely to go to war-ravaged Jaffna in the Tamil-dominated Northern Province and Trincomalee in the Eastern Province, sources said. If Modi visits Jaffna, he would be the first Indian Prime Minister to do so.
The visit comes within a month of new Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena's India trip this week that saw the two countries sign a civil nuclear pact. This was Sirisena's first foreign visit after assuming charge following a bitter presidential poll in which he defeated former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, ending his 10-year rule.
