Minister Madan Mitra today went from one hospital to another and got to choose the jail cell he might be shifted to if the court cracks the whip.

The transport minister was released this morning from SSKM hospital after a seven-member medical board found "no reason" to keep him at the facility. He was taken to Alipore jail, where a cabin in ward No. 4 of the jail hospital was kept furnished for him.

A section of the Alipore prison staff expressed surprise after Mitra was admitted to the jail hospital.

"Doctors at SSKM hospital issued a discharge certificate after medical tests conducted on Mitra found no abnormality. He can be considered fit like any other inmate here. He should have been taken to a cell instead of the jail hospital where inmates are entitled to several facilities," a jail official said.

According to sources, after Mitra was shown the jail hospital ward, he visited all the 10 cells on the other side of the compound. He was first taken to cell No. 1, which was kept ready for him after shifting an accused in the Kamduni gang rape and murder case. The minister did not like the cell.
