The state prison authorities on Tuesday granted 14 days furlough to actor Sanjay Dutt, who is serving a five-year sentence in the Yerawada central prison.

Jail superintendent Yogesh Desai said, "The jail authorities have granted a leave of furlough to Sanjay Dutt for 14 days. After completing the formalities, Dutt will be released from the jail on Wednesday or Thursday."

Dutt had applied for a leave last month. He was earlier granted a leave in October 2013 for a period of 28 days. Furlough is a legally entitled leave for prisoners to ensure they maintain contact with society and their families. It requires no particular reason and can be extended after two weeks for another two weeks initially, and with reason for up to 120 days. The leave initially granted for two weeks is counted as part of the prison term and is available every year to the convicts.
