The Congress-National Conference alliance in Jammu & Kashmir ended on Sunday with both the parties deciding to go it alone in the assembly elections due later this year. However, the parties indicated the decision wouldn't affect the functioning of the present state government, which has been in power since January 2009.

As the Congress announced that it would contest all the 87 seats in the state on its own, chief minister Omar Abdullah tweeted he had already met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi 10 days ago and told her of the NC's decision to go it alone in the elections.
