Sports fraternity is dejected and angry over the proposal to raze a portion of KD Singh Babu stadium to pave way for a parking slot. They say it will deprive some promising sportspersons of their lone practicing area.
"In a state like UP where sports infrastructure is already in a pitiable state and where SP chief Mulayam Singh and chief minister Akhilesh Yadav claim to be ardent lovers of sports, such a drastic step is not a prudent move," said Anoop Srivastava, a boxing enthusiast.
The biggest loss is for boxers as the state government has picked the boxing ring area for demolition. "The stadium at present has three international and six national level boxers who train here. It is really sad that instead of giving them an incentive, the government has left them aghast," said Ram Singh, boxing coach at KD Singh Babu stadium.
"Apart from cricket, tennis, swimming etc., the ground is equally important for those who are into weight lifting, boxing and judo. Converting the gymnastic and boxing area into a parking zone just to ease traffic snarls is not acceptable," said volleyball player Rupesh Yadav.
"I'm deeply saddened with this news as it's a direct attack on sportsperson hampering their growth and their sportsmanship spirit," averred Olympian Syed Ali.
Mohsin Raza, president of UP Sports Welfare Association, drew a parallel between the SP and BSP governments. "Mayawati government bulldozed Gomtinagar sports complex overnight and Akhilesh is doing the same," he said. "It is a shameful step that the government has taken, not realizing that it is being extremely unfair towards aspiring sportspersons," he added.
