While the Congress feels that Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde's remarks — that he would be happy to see NCP chief Sharad Pawar become PM — are nothing but an attempt to keep the ally in good humour, the BJP said this shows that the Congress has accepted that Dr Manmohan Singh's successor will not be from the party.
Though the Congress did not react formally to Mr Shinde's remarks, made ahead of he Lok Sabha polls, senior Congress officials said the NCP knows very well that it has no numbers required to become the PM, and Mr Shinde's remarks would certainly please the Sharad Pawar-led party.
