In a major setback for M K Alagiri, DMK disbanded the entire Madurai urban district unit dominated by supporters of the southern strongman. A temporary committee comprising largely loyalists of Alagiri's younger brother and party treasurer M K Stalin has been set up.

The move by the party comes days after Alagiri's men put up posters in Madurai undermining the significance of DMK general council meeting held in December, thus inviting the wrath of party chief M Karunanidhi.
