Food Security Bill is on the last stretch of the relay with Rajya Sabha passing the bill late last night. It will now be sent to the President and after he signs, the bill will become a law.
Some members pointed out that despite their support for the bill, it was a half baked attempt. BJP's Arun Jaitley said it was repackaging of various existing schemes. His colleague Venkaiah Naidu called it a gimmick as the government is rushing to pass the bill just before elections.
Cong maverick MP Mani Shankar Aiyar also blasted the govt saying ignorance of panchayats and reliance on bureaucracy is not desirable as civil supplies departments were dens of corruption. His comments were welcomed by opposition members by thumping of desks.
