JD(U) and RJD announced they would continue efforts for an anti-BJP pact to fight the year-end Bihar polls, but failed to indicate whether they had reached common ground on two sticking points -- projection of Nitish Kumar as CM candidate of the proposed alliance and the broad contours of the seat-sharing formula. Samajawadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's intervention failed to end the uncertainty over the thorny issues.

Lalu wants the seats to be shared on the basis of performance of the two parties in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. That would give RJD a leg-up, as it had put up a relatively robust performance compared to JD(U) which fared badly in the polls, the first after Nitish parted ways with BJP. Nitish, on the other hand, wants the seat-sharing formula to be based on the performance in 2010 assembly polls which the JD(U)-BJP combine had virtually swept.
