The grief and anger in Sarabjit Singh's native village Bikhiwind was palpable with thousands of mourners thronging his body for hours before the pyre was lit. The man who remained ignored by India's politicians through his life saw the full political turnout at his funeral today. As Sarabjit's mortal remains were confined to flames, with full state honours, among those present were Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his entire cabinet and Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur. The political attention that Sarabjit's sister craved during her brother's lifetime finally came only in his death.
