"This is not an attempt to stereotype because a majority of the people living in the area dress in that attire. It was simply a reflection of that, not a deliberate attempt to single out a community."
But political parties were quick to latch on to the issue and targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Gujarat for stereotyping a particular community.
JDU leader Ali Anwar said, "Mr Modi (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) was the CM of Gujarat, still we see such incident taking place. It is a very unfortunate incident, it shows the mindset of the people. Terrorism should not be shown in relation to any religion."
The Congress, too, took on the BJP with senior Congress leader Rashid Alvi saying, "Terrorism cannot be shown in relation to any religion, it is a very unfortunate incident. This kind of incidents will promote terrorism. Since BJP government has come into power such incidents have risen and BJP is responsible for this.
