Even as women activists have upped the ante on the ordinance brought about on Sexual assault, Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram has defended it. Chidambaram has expressed hope that the stringent provisions of the ordinance will deter potential criminals, protect dignity of women, restrain police excess and facilitate better evidence recording. The Minister also noted that it would not be right to say that the Government rejected recommendations of the JS Verma Committee.
