The court battle for ownership of Amethi palace between Congress MP Sanjay Sinh and his son Anant Vikram turned bloody on Sunday when a policeman was killed and several villages were injured in the exchange of fire. Anant is Sanjay's son from his first wife Garima. He along with his mother is staying in the palace for the past one month and seeking his share which his father is denying. On Sunday, Sanjay and his second wife Amita were going to Amethi from Lucknow for the court case about the palace ownership.

Hearing this, villagers in Amethi surrounded the palace in a bid to prevent the two from reaching Bhupathi Bhawan. Meanwhile, police reached the spot and tried to disperse the villagers by force. Villagers allege that the police started firing on the crowd. Villagers retaliated too in which a constable was shot who later died in hospital. Several villagers were injured in the clash. Although the situation was brought under control, it continues to be tense.

On Sunday morning as the news of Sanjay's arrival along with his second wife Ameeta Singh at the palace broke out, the local administration decided to deploy force outside the palace. The local residents, who have been supporting Sanjay's first wife Garima Singh and her children learned about the development and also started collecting at the palace.

Cops tried to stop entry of more and more villagers whose number kept swelling. At this the crowd turned hostile and a bloody feud between police and public began. The Amethi - Munshiganj road was blocked for few hours. Entry of media persons was also banned for few hours during the violent exchange. A handful of media persons who had managed to reach the palace in advance were also attacked by policemen, as per reports.

To disperse the crowd, cops fired gunshots in the air, lobbed tear gas shells and charged cane. The violent mob also fired gunshots and Mishra died in the incident. The policemen also damaged shops at Ramnagar market, where many supporters of Sanjay Singh's first family stay and warned the residents staying in the locality to stay away from the dispute between two families. 18 villagers have been detained.
