53 per cent polling recorded in Uttar Pradesh by-polls till 5 pm

Polling for byelections to 33 assembly seats across nine states and three Parliamentary constituencies in three states is being held today. Stakes are high in UP for the BJP and the ruling Samajwadi Party which will slug it out on the 11 assembly constituencies and the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat. UP also being fought in a charged atmosphere is being seen as a test for both Modi, who now represents Varanasi Lok Sabha seat and Amit Shah who was catapulted as party president on account of the impressive performance in Lok Sabha polls as the state in-charge.
Voting picked up by afternoon in the by-polls for four Rajasthan assembly constituencies.

"The polling has been peaceful so far and as per tentative information, over 41.20 per cent of the 8.95 lakh electors had cast their votes till 1 p.m.," said an election department official.

The maximum polling of over 45 percent was reported from Surajgarh and the minimum of over 36 percent from Kota south till 1 p.m.
