India's triple Olympic gold medallist and one of the legends of the game of hockey, Leslie Claudius has died after a prolonged illness. Claudius was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver and frequently needed hospitalisation over the past couple of years. In an illustrious career, Claudius won three Olympic gold medals in London 1948, Helsinki 1952 and Melbourne 1956 Olympics. At Rome in 1960, he led India to a silver—medal finish. Born in Bilaspur, Claudius was conferred with the prestigious Padmashree Award back in 1971. Claudius passed away in his home town in Kolkata.
