Afzal Guru was arrested soon after the 2001 terrorist attack on Parliament, and convicted of conspiracy. He was sentenced to death by a trial court in 2002. The Delhi High Court upheld the death sentence in 2003 and in 2005, it was upheld by the Supreme Court. Afzal Guru's execution was scheduled for 20th of October, 2006. But the execution was stayed after his wife filed a mercy petition with the President. After Ajmal Kasab's sudden hanging, now clamour for Afzal's Guru's execution is growing. Now Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said he will take up Afzal Guru's mercy plea once the winter session of Parliament ends.
