Counting of votes for bypolls held in 18 Assembly seats began at 8 am today, The bypolls for 10 seats in Bihar, three each in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, and two for Punjab were held this month only. An important aspect of the result of the bypolls in Bihar will be the acid test of the ‘Lalu-Nitish partnership’. It remains to be seen if the charisma of the duo can eclipse the growing popularity of the BJP in the State.
In Bihar, the election is being seen as acid test for RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Stakes are high for the BJP-led NDA as it faces the challenge of retaining six Assembly seats, i.e., Narkatianganj, Jale, Chapra, Mohiuddinnagar, Bhagalpur and Hajipur — which it won in the 2010 polls in alliance with the JD(U).
In Punjab, the main contest is between the Akali Dal and the Congress, although the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which won four seats in the Lok Sabha election earlier this year, is also in the fray. Meanwhile, the BJP is keeping its fingers crossed in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.
