The Punjab and Haryana High court has taken a suo moto cognizance in the Patiala rape and suicide case. It has issued a notice to the state government. The case pertains to an 18-year-old Patiala girl who was driven to suicide, 44 days after she was gangraped, because the police didn't arrest the suspects. It was only after her death that the Punjab Police swung into action And arrested the alleged rapists viz Balwinder Singh, Gurpreet Singh and a woman Shinderpal Kaur who helped them. The police also sacked two officers including a DSP and suspended an Assistant Sub Inspector. A senior officer has been deputed to investigate why the suspects were not arrested for so long.
