In 1973 Marlon Brando boycotted the Oscars. Knowing he was going to win Best Actor, he sent Native American activist Sacheen Littlefeather to accept the award on his behalf a read a speech by him on the terrible mistreatment of Native Americans. Littlefeather was booed and applauded, and did not have enough time to read out the speech.
