1 As per an elaborated tale mentioned in the Bhagavata Purana, an evil king called Vena neglected Vedic rituals and disrespected Dharma.

2 He also plundered the earth-goddess till such an extent that she refused to provide the resources and ran away in form of cow. This resulted in havoc and wailing everywhere due to the famine.

3 The worried sages decided to resolve the problem for which they took a blade of grass and flung it towards the king after chanting few mantras.

4 The greedy king was instantly killed but the kingdom was left without an heir. So the sages churned his corpse. From that matter, a dark creature had first appeared.

5 They removed all that was savage and the body was now pure in the remnants out of which the sages created a new king called Prithu or Prithi.

6 According to Vedic scriptures, Prithu is an avatar of Lord Vishnu and is also considered as a Chakravartin.

7 To end the famine, Prithu approached the earth-cow and requested for her milk, but she refused and fled away.

8 Prithu had to chase the earth-cow and he raised his bow to threaten her. He explained to her that he needs to domesticate the earth to feed the humanity.

9 The earth agreed but on a condition that it should be done moderately. And so, by granting life to the earth, Prithu became her protector and she accepted the name "Prithvi".
