1 Navratna or Nauratan (literally, nine jewels) is a term collectively applied to those nine extraordinary people in any emperor's court.

2 These royal court-men were experts in their respective fields and would assist the king with their advice.

3 The famous personalities of the golden period who belonged to the Vikramaditya’s court were Dhanwanthari, Kshapanaka, Amarasimha, Shankhu, Khatakarpara, Kalidasa, VetalBhatt, Vararuchi, and Varahamihira.

4 The prominent figures who were considered as Navratnas by Emperor Akhbar are Birbal, Abul Faijal, Mian Tansen, Fakir Aji-o-din, Abdul Rahim Khan Khana, Todarmal, Man Singh, Mulla Do Pyaja and Hakim Hukam.

5 It is believed that many great emperors, including Maharaja Krishnachandra, Maharaja Krishna Deva Raya, Maharaj Lakshman Sen and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had their own set of courtiers labelled in similar or other ways.

6 It is believed that Mauryan Emperor Ashoka had found a secret society of nine unknown men who were entrusted with nine classified books.
