The U.S. says it's reached an agreement with South Korea, "in principle," on how to share the cost of stationing American troops in the country.
A State Department official told Yonhap News Agency on Monday... that the two sides have settled in principle on a new Special Measures Agreement... to replace the one that expired in December.
The final agreement on defense cost sharing is expected to be made within this week.
The official added that the two sides are working to solve the remaining technical issues as quickly as possible... and said the U.S. appreciates the resources that Korea provides to support the alliance.
CNN also reported on Monday that the allies had reached a preliminary agreement..., and that South Korea would boost its financial contribution to nearly 1-billion U.S. dollars a year.
