President Moon Jae-in met with officials from the ministries of commerce, environment and agriculture on Tuesday to look at ways to ensure some positive economic results in the new year... after a generally disappointing 2018.
Shin Se-min reports.
President Moon Jae-in pointed out Tuesday that despite the government's push for innovative growth, one of its three core economic initiatives,... such efforts have not been felt in the real economy.
He was briefed by the country's trade ministry on its policy plans for the new year.
Speaking in front of the press, the president called for all-out efforts to transform the very foundation of the industrial sector.
He called for an overhaul of Korean industry and for making Korea's growth engines work again -- there's still a chance, he said, to revive the country's manufacturing.

"We still have a diverse and solid manufacturing base that is the envy of the world. If we revive our traditionally strong industries and revolutionize and enhance our manufacturing sectors through smart factories and by fostering future industries, I am certain the economy will rebound."

The president pressed hard for tangible economic outcomes in the new year, saying he will use all policy means to improve corporate investment, which could include governmental procurement... and research and development.
On the environmental front,... he ordered officials to clean up air pollution, which is directly related to people's health... and is also a cross-border problem.

"Fine dust pollution is not only a national concern for us but an issue between countries as well. The environment ministry should be at the center of consultations among concerned organizations and should push ahead with policies to cut emissions from diesel cars and power plants so the people can breathe comfortably."

He also called for more incentives for firms that better protect the environment -- pressing the importance of saving the environment while also promoting the country's economic growth.
And meeting with officials from the agriculture ministry, Moon again highlighted the importance of innovation in farming,... saying that the sector must work to provide new jobs for young Koreans by integrating communications technology.
