President Trump on Thursday claimed that Mexico is effectively "paying for the wall" as a result of the new trade deal.
"I often stated, 'One way or the other, Mexico is going to pay for the Wall.' This has never changed. Our new deal with Mexico (and Canada), the USMCA, is so much better than the old, very costly & anti-USA NAFTA deal, that just by the money we save, MEXICO IS PAYING FOR THE WALL!" Trump tweeted.
Some of Trump's most prominent supporters have criticized him in the past months for not fulfilling his campaign promise to build the border wall.
Meanwhile, Trump has blamed lawmakers for the lack of funding.
He tweeted Wednesday: "The Democrats and President Obama gave Iran 150 Billion Dollars and got nothing, but they can't give 5 Billion Dollars for National Security and a Wall?"
The tweet came after his testy Oval Office exchange with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday.
"I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck, because the people of this country don't want criminals and people that have lots of problems and drugs pouring into our country," Trump said during the meeting. "So I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. I'm not going to blame you for it. The last time you shut it down, it didn't work. I will take the mantle of shutting down."
