Police cracked down on protests over a proposed garbage incinerator in China’s northeastern Liaoning province on Wednesday, following several days of rallies in opposition to plans to build the facility near the township centre.
Video obtained by a South China Morning Post reporter showed thousands of villagers marching with banners, and security officers moving in with shields and batons. Such protests have become more frequent in China in recent years due to concerns about the potential health hazards of industrial projects and distrust of local governments.
