Nissan has sacked its chairman, Carlos Ghosn, days after his arrest for alleged financial misconduct.
Thursday's vote was unanimous across the seven-member board and ends Ghosn's near-20-year reign of the Japanese carmaker.
It also marks a drastic fall from grace for the auto industry legend, who is credited with saving Nissan from bankruptcy and forging a successful alliance with Mitsubishi Motors and French carmaker Renault.
Ghosn's dismissal had caused concern about the fate of the alliance, but Nissan said the partnership remains unchanged.
The economy ministers of Japan and France, which holds a 15 percent stake in Renault, also reaffirmed their support for the Nissan-Renault alliance.
