It seems President Macron and Angela Merkel got along so well at the armistice commemoration at the weekend that one elderly lady mistook Merkel for Macron's wife. The French and German leaders were attending the ceremony at Compiegne on Saturday when they encountered the lady, aged 100, waiting in the crowd. She was full of excitement as she shook hands with Macron, saying it was fantastic for a little old lady like herself to be shaking hands with the President of France. She then turned to Chancellor Merkel and asked: "Are you Mrs Macron?" Merkel smiled broadly, leaned into the lady's ear and replied: "No, I'm the Chancellor of Germany." The lady's relatives explained she was set to turn 101 in just two days' time. "You don't say!", replied Macron.
