Karl Marx studied capitalism. His epic work was to find the faults of the capitalist system that dehumanised the worker. The premise was simple, for maximum profit, the cost of labour had to be the least, therefore social justice would be impossible. To keep the cost of labour cheap, their had to exist poverty stricken masses readily available as a labour pool. Much has changed since he was buried in a cemetry in England. In a modern economy, labour is not the biggest cost. Capitalism has reformed across the globe, even the Chinese are booming with what they call socialism with Chinese characteristics. But away from leftist politicians, there are those in almost every country still wedding to the romance of a perpetual revolution. Not against a tsarist tyranny, but here against a democratic republic. They justify the use of an armed struggle and their foot soldiers translate their pedagogy into bloody violence. The rest of India is rapidly developing, most of you watching this are far more privileged than the tribals of Chhattisgarh. But the answer to their growth is India's march of progress, not chaos engendered by a revolution. Today, the pm has called them out. The ideologues in the cities now called urban Naxals and their bloody foot soldiers. The Congress, is being certainly cagey. The most troubled parts vote on monday under maoist siege. Democracy is under attack, journalists have been killed. Can we hope to see politicians take a united stand against red terror instead of soft pedalling it for mistaken political benefits.
