The European Union reaffirmed that pressure on North Korea will remain in place until a denuclearization deal is done, and that verification mechanisms show that it is working.
This is according to the EU's Foreign Affairs and Security Policy team on Monday, in a reply to a question from VOA on whether the sanctions may be used as leverage to achieve Pyeongyang's denuclearization.
The team went on to say that monitoring and verification remain "crucial" and that multilateral efforts in this regard will be necessary.
It then urged the North to sign in various international treaties promising the safe use of nuclear energy and a ban on nuclear weapons.
The EU team also said that it supports South Korea's leading role in current talks with the North and has a very positive view of South Korean President Moon Jae-in's efforts to promote peace.
