X-Files star and campaigner Gillian Anderson delivered a 300,000-signature petition to the foreign office calling for a massive chunk of the Antarctic to become protected.
The actress, flanked by Greenpeace supporters and a statue of an Emperor penguin in London, delivered the petition to the government demanding the establishment of an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary in the Weddell Sea.
The proposed sanctuary could be as large as 1.11m square miles – seven times the size of the UK.
Supporters of the proposal say it will provide an area for wildlife such as penguins and whales to recover from overfishing, climate change and pollution.
It comes after a landmark UN report delivered an ultimatum on climate change, warning against a 1.5 degrees Celsius rise in global temperatures before 2030.
