A powerful typhoon brought heavy rain and high winds as it battered southern Japan on Saturday.

Tyhpoon Trami forced authorities to cancel flights and power outages were reported in several cities.

Outlying islands in the Okinawan chain, around 1,000 km southwest of Tokyo, were being pounded by heavy rain and high tides on Saturday.
