September 17, 2018 - This newborn tree kangaroo is a sign of hope for the species. It was born in early 2018 at the Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria, Australia. It has just poked its head out from its mother’s pouch for the first time. The joey is a Goodfellow’s tree kangaroo, one of more than a dozen species of tree kangaroo. The species is considered endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Unlike their ground-hopping counterparts, Goodfellow's tree kangaroos are not nimble on the ground. However, they are agile in the treetops. This Goodfellow’s tree kangaroo birth is the first one at the Healesville Sanctuary. The sanctuary is operated by the conservation organization, Zoos Victoria. Zoos Victoria is a non-profit organization committed to fighting wildlife extinction.
