A 40-foot dam breached Saturday night, September 15, south of Wilmington, North Carolina, as heavy rains from Hurricane Florence swelled waterways and washed out roads.
The Sanford Dam held back lake waters in Boiling Spring Lakes, and by Monday morning, Patricia, North and Pine Lakes were almost completely drained. Residents on the north side of the lakes, many of whom evacuated inland as Florence headed for shore, found their way home blocked by washed out roads. Credit: litlmissoutlaw via Storyful
