The island of Rota was worst affected as Typhoon Mangkhut hit the Mariana Islands on September 10.

The eye of the typhoon passed directly over over Rota, but brought damage to the archipelago’s other islands too. Reports said Rota’s only hospital was put out of operation. Families were displaced, and power outages and blocked roads were reported.

The governor of the Northern Mariana Islands, Ralph Torres, requested an emergency declaration from US President Donald Trump. This was approved, and FEMA said it had “staff and supplies ready to support response and recovery operations.”

Footage here by James Bamba shows the typhoon’s strong winds.
