The fascinating Yellow Headed Sleeper Goby (Valenciennea strigata), also known as Gold Head or Blue Band Gobies, live in pairs in burrows in the sand and sift sand through their mouths and expel the sand through their gills to catch tiny crustaceans and other creatures, fish eggs or even small fish. In doing so, they also oxygenate the sand. When they feel threatened one of the pair will act as a decoy to lure the threat away while the other hides in their burrow in the sand. They also take turns to feed while the other one stands guard. Pairs remain monogamous unless they find a larger, more appealing mate! They extend from Tahiti in the East to Australia in the South to Taiwan in the North and as far West as Africa.
