Just as the IFSC Climbing World Cup season was getting into full swing one of the most hotly debated topics in climbing has once again swung back into the spotlight. News broke on Monday that climbing had made the shortlist for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Japan. The last time climbing made a bid for Olympic inclusion, it prompted some fairly heated debate from within the community. Many were concerned that introducing the public to climbing via a competitive format would mean presenting climbing as a simplified version of itself that failed to encapsulate the numerous other aspects of the sport...or should that be lifestyle? Others expressed concern that climbing might go the way of other sports like Snowboarding that have traditionally had a fairly turbulent relationship with the Olympics.
