This was the astonishing moment locals went berserk - grabbing hundreds of bottles of brandy that fell from an overturned lorry.

The truck was taking a sharp corner on a mountain road in Quezon province, Philippines, when it swerved to avoid an oncoming van and its side doors opened.

Hundreds of boxes of Emperador Brandy spilled onto the road on August 12 at 10am - sparking frantic scenes as residents - including children - grabbed handfuls of liquor.

The accident caused gridlock after blocking the road before dozens or drivers and locals converged on the wreckage to loot the liquor.

Onlooker Ryan Oliva said: ''People were going crazy. Everybody wanted to get something. Brandy is expensive so some people were taking them to sell. Other people just wanted to drink it.

''I felt sorry for the driver. The accident was not his fault. I watched what was happening but I didn't take any of the liquor.''

According to Gumaca Municipal Police station, the truck was on its way to nearby province Bicol when it toppled over.

The trailer doors suddenly opened sending boxes of brandy bottles on all directions, police said.

A spokesman said: ''People who saw what happened casually took a bottle and called for others so they can help with the 'scavenging.' The accident caused commotion and a lot of traffic.''

The total amount of damage is still unknown although no one was hurt during the incident.
