NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, named after astro-physicist Eugene Park, will fly to the sun, taking us closer to its surface than any other mission in history.
The car-sized spacecraft will be launched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral on Saturday at around 3:50 am eastern standard time.
The one-point-five billion dollar mission aims to discover why the corona, the sun's atmosphere..., is so much hotter than it's surface, and also to investigate the cause of solar winds.
With a carbon heat shield, the probe will travel to within six-point-one million kilometers of the sun’s surface.
After making its closest approach in late 2024, the spacecraft will run out of fuel and be destroyed.
