A special ceremony marking the fifth anniversary of the first memorial statue in a major U.S. city honoring Korean victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery took place in Glendale, California on Tuesday.
The Korean American Forum of California said people gathered to recall the meaning of the so-called "comfort women" statue and look back on a dark period in Korea's history.
The statue has faced strong opposition from Japan, which has tried to bring it down through letters, visits by Japanese politicians and a lawsuit that went to the U.S. Supreme Court.
