Pediatricians Warn Against Effects
of Kids Eating
Chemical Additives The American Academy of Pediatrics
wants parents and pregnant women to
be aware of chemical additives that
can be harmful to children. Such chemicals are nitrates and nitrites, BPA's, phthalates and perfluoroalkyl chemicals, which can be found in processed foods, as well as plastics. These compounds have
been associated with
endocrine disruption,
obesity and insulin resistance. There are also possible neurocognitive effects, such as hyperactivity. Low-income families are at higher risk due to consuming a lot of prepackaged foods. In an effort to avoid these chemicals, parents should skip processed meats packaged in plastic or food in metal cans. Instead, they should make an effort to buy fresh or frozen produce when possible. It's also best to avoid putting plastic containers in the dishwasher or microwave, as the heat can draw out the chemicals.
