Education Secretary Betsy Devos Proposes Cuts to Student Loan Relief Students defrauded by U.S. schools will have a harder time getting federal loans erased under new rules proposed by Betsy Devos. Devos' proposal has drawn approval from for-profit industries but sharp criticism from advocacy groups that represent student borrowers. Under the proposal, students would be eligible for loan relief if they can prove their schools misled them with actions that led them to taking out loans or enrolling. Education Department officials say they have received more than 100,000 fraud claims since 2015. The new rules would apply only to loans taken out after July 1, 2019.
