Science and technology R&D should focus on long-term, people-centered innovations... not on immediate gains and returns.
That's South Korea's new vision as laid out during the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology on Thursday.
During the meeting, President Moon said science and technology must, in the end, help improve the lives of ordinary people and in order for that to happen, we must change the way science and scientists are viewed in the society.
"Our scientists and engineers are world class. We must train them to be scientists and engineers with expertise by creating an environment where they can only focus on their research."
He also stressed the importance of recreating a support system that allows failures so as to enable long-term, innovative and challenging research projects.
