Agricultural fields in Nahal Oz, a town located close to the border with Gaza in Israel, was set ablaze on May 17, after kites launched from Gaza carrying burning fuel.

People in Gaza have frequently launched balloons or kites with burning material attached to them to float over the Israeli border to ignite fires.

Israel, in turn, shut down a critical commercial border and limited fishing, and has fired on kite and balloon launchers. On July 14, Israel carried out multiple airstrikes, with Hamas then launching rockets into Israeli territory in response.

Protests in Gaza have been ongoing since March, in part prompted by US President Trump’s decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Credit: Tom Oren-Denenberg via Storyful
