As rivers overflow due to heavy monsoon rains, people are rushing to net coconuts in Kerala, India.

Swelling rivers have flooded agricultural farms in many districts shaking up mature coconuts from their trees.

The powerful current then sweeps away the nuts, which fall into the water.

Residents of many villages in Kottayam district saw the husky nuts floating in the local Moovattupuzha river and rushed to pluck them from the water.

A resident of Kottayam, Lijo Verghese, 28, said: “There is good demand for coconuts now. Netting them is as lucrative as catching fish.”

“Seeing the rush to catch coconuts, a few enterprising businessmen are selling net baskets to catch them,” he added.
