South Korean President Moon Jae-in has ordered his military to immediately turn in all documents drafted by a military intelligence unit that detailed plans to declare martial law if protests grew violent following a court ruling in March 2017 that would determine the fate of conservative then-President Park Geun-hye.

"President Moon said although the case will be investigated strictly and fairly by the defense ministry's special team, as the commander-in-chief, he needs to find out what really happened and whether the martial law plan had been readied to the level of execution."

The president's order comes amid an ongoing probe into revelations this past week of a document showing the military's Defense Security Command in late 2016 drafted plans to mobilize troops to
suppress protests and crack down on rallies and candlelight vigils against then-President Park.
Lawmakers had impeached Park over broad corruption allegations in December 2016.
The plans for troop deployment were never carried out.
