Protests in Nicaragua on Eve of General Strike

Thousands of people took to the streets in protest in the capital Managua and elsewhere in Nicaragua on July 12, calling for President Daniel Ortega to resign.

Protesters used the phrase “Juntos somos un volcan,” or “Together we are a volcano,” and came out on the eve of a general strike planned for Friday, July 13.

The Organization of American States was to meet on July 13 to consider the unrest in Nicaragua at the request of the Permanent Missions of Argentina, Canada, Chile, Peru, and the United States.
