Chris strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane on Tuesday, July 10, but it remained well away from the US East Coast on Wednesday.

Chris was forecast to travel northeast, away from the US coast, brushing near Newfoundland, Canada, by the weekend. The storm was generating rough surf and rip currents as it spun offshore.
