Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian Confirmed for 'Star Wars: Episode IX' Audiences were introduced to the character in 1980's Empire Strikes Back. The former smuggler turned Cloud City politician and old friend of Han Solo quickly became a fan favorite. So much so that a younger Lando Calrissian, brought to life by Donald Glover, played a prominent role in the recent 'Solo: A Star Wars Story.' Williams has made appearances on the convention circuit and has lent his voice for the Calrissian character in cartoon series and video games. But appearing in Episode IX marks his return to the Star Wars film franchise for the first time since 1983’s Return of the Jedi. 'Episode IX' is being directed by J.J. Abrams. Production is set to begin later this summer with a theatrical release date set for December 20, 2019.
