Meek Mill Denied a Retrial After 2008 Conviction On Tuesday, Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Genece Brinkley dismissed the rapper’s petition for a new trial, saying his attorney, “failed to meet his burden of proof.” Mill’s attorney’s cited issues with the arresting officer who testified in the case and evidence supported his claims. The request for a retrial was also backed by District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office. Mill, born Robert Rihmeek Williams, was arrested in 2008 and convicted on gun and drug charges. In November, Brinkley sentenced him to 2 to 4 years in prison for violating terms of his probation, but he served five months until the state Supreme Court ordered his release in April. Mill’s trial was the highlight of debates concerning the U.S. justice system and sentencing.
